  5. I got Windows 3.1 this morning,  and was all eager to try out  the multimedia 
  6. stuff [on my non-multimedia pc :-)], and was greatly disappointed to see that 
  7. there was no PC-Speaker  sound driver.  So,  I called up Microsoft's  BBS and 
  8. here it is.  
  9.  
  10. It really sounds horrible, but if you don't have $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ for a sound 
  11. board, it's better than nothing. Play with the speed and volume values - they 
  12. can REALLY make a  big difference.   I found that  on my computer  (a Gateway
  13. 2000 386/25) a speed of  between 280 and  290  and a volume of 10.0 works the  
  14. best - PC-Speakers aren't that great at bass notes!

  24. By using the following Windows 3.1 Driver Library
  25. (the "Software"), you are hereby agreeing to the
  26. included license agreement.

  28. "Enable interrupts during playback" Setup Option
  29. ------------------------------------------------
  30. By default, the PC Speaker driver disables all 
  31. interrupts while playing sounds for optimal sound 
  32. quality.  As a result, you will noticed that the 
  33. mouse cursor, keyboard or other processes will not 
  34. respond while sounds are being played through the 
  35. PC Speaker.  You can set PC Speaker to enable 
  36. interrupts for serial port activity and mouse 
  37. movements in the PC Speaker setup dialog, at the 
  38. expense of sound quality.

  40. To set this option:
  41.     - Run Control Panel
  42.     - Open the Drivers icon
  43.     - Select the Sound Driver for PC Speaker from
  44.       the list of Installed Drivers
  45.     - Choose Setup
  46.     - Select or clear the Enable interrupts during
  47.       playback check box.

  49. Note: It may be necessary to select option when 
  50. running some communication applications.

  53. Using the PC Speaker driver with AST systems
  54. --------------------------------------------
  55. If you experience problems using the PC Speaker 
  56. driver on an AST system, you should contact AST 
  57. Technical Support at 1-800-727-1278.

  59. Using Media Player with the PC Speaker driver
  60. ---------------------------------------------
  61. The version of Media Player provided with Windows
  62. 3.1 does not play *.WAV files with the PC Speaker
  63. driver.  To play *.WAV files, you should use Sound
  64. Recorder.  Windows 3.1 will install the Sound
  65. Recorder icon in your Accessories Program Manager
  66. group.
